One of the most intriguing revelations is that The Tyrant is set in the same universe as the film The Witch. Directed by Park Hoon Jong, who previously helmed The Witch franchise, this connection adds an extra layer of excitement for fans. According to Director Park, the stories in The Tyrant and The Witch occur in different locations within the same world.

“It’s like The Witch tells the story of the eastern side of the map, while The Tyrant is on the western side. It’s possible that they could meet because they’re like parallel to each other. There are also events on the northern side, as well as in the south. Many things happen in that universe,” said Cha Seung Won, who plays Im Sang in the drama.

Kim Seon Ho, known for his role in The Childe, directed by Park Hoon Jong, returns to the small screen as Choi in The Tyrant. He shared his enthusiasm for the project, citing his admiration for The Witch films as a significant factor in his decision.

“I’m a big fan of The Witch franchise. I was really happy when I found out that their universe was the same. However, this character of Choi is something I’ve never played in my entire acting career. So I’m bringing a very new character, and that’s the reason I chose The Tyrant,” said Kim Seon Ho.

Park Hoon Jong, primarily known for his work in films, makes his drama series debut with The Tyrant. His previous directorial works include The Showdown (2011), VIP (2017), and Night in Paradise (2021). Transitioning from film to drama was challenging for him.

“This is my first time working not on a film, but on a series and it’s very difficult because maybe this is my first experience. My respect to the creators of the series,” Park Hoon Jong shared, highlighting the differences between the two mediums.

Jo Yoon Soo, who has previously been seen in supporting roles in dramas like True Beauty and Juvenile Justice, steps into his first lead role as Ja Kyeong in The Tyrant. He expressed his excitement and nerves about this significant career milestone.

“I’m a big fan of director Park. It’s an honor to play Ja Kyeong in his first drama. When I read the script, I thought, ‘Wow, I’m playing an incredibly cool character.’ So I’m quite nervous and excited,” he said.

Kim Seon Ho’s Relaxed Character

In The Tyrant, Kim Seon Ho plays Director Choi, a character who contrasts sharply with his role in The Childe. Director Choi, the youngest director, is ambitious yet maintains a calm demeanor, handling crises with a cool head.

“Director Choi is the opposite character from the one I played in The Childe. An innocent face with sparkling eyes, maybe the only thing they have in common. However, Director Choi is more vulnerable, weaker, lonelier. In The Childe, my character can always enjoy everything. But Director Choi in The Tyrant is someone who has a lot of conflicts in his head, he has a lot of thoughts. But physically, I am more relaxed playing the character Choi,” Kim Seon Ho explained.

As fans eagerly await its release, The Tyrant promises to be a thrilling addition to the Korean drama scene, intertwining with the beloved The Witch universe. Catch The Tyrant on Disney+ Hotstar starting August 14, 2024, and prepare for a ride filled with suspense, drama, and intriguing connections.
