In the drama “Queen of Tears,” we delve not only into the tumultuous lives of a corporate heiress and her spouse but also into their complex family dynamics. Amidst the turmoil, there are deep-seated traumas that haunt our characters since childhood.
Let’s explore the childhood traumas experienced by three pivotal characters in this Korean drama: Yoon Eun Sung, Hong Hae In, and Hong Soo Cheol.
1. Yoon Eun Sung
In the midst of the turmoil surrounding the overthrow of Hong Man Dae, it’s revealed that Yoon Eun Sung is the son of Mo Seul Hee. To further his coup plans, Mo Seul Hee sends his son to an orphanage.
When Hong Hae In visits the orphanage, Yoon Eun Sung, in a fit of fear, attacks a dog, narrowly escaping injury himself. Despite saving Hong Hae In and receiving a slap from the dog’s owner, Yoon Eun Sung finds no solace, except from Hong Hae In.
Haunted by this incident, Yoon Eun Sung develops a deep-seated hatred for dogs and eventually resorts to extreme measures, even getting arrested for poisoning a dog near the orphanage. Thus, he grows into a harsh and unforgiving individual.
2. Hong Hae In
As a child, Hong Hae In faces a near-death experience drowning in the sea, only to be rescued by his older brother, Hong Su Wan, who tragically does not survive. This loss devastates the family.
Despite being a victim of circumstance, Hong Hae In grapples with guilt and trauma, exacerbated by his mother’s blame and resentment towards him for his brother’s demise.
Isolated by his past and his mother’s harshness, Hong Hae In grows into an independent individual who internalizes his struggles, choosing not to burden others with his pain.
